Basement Insulation Kansas City
Insulating your basement can help reduce your energy cost. The U.S. Dept of Energy estimates that Insulating your basement can save you up to $300 per year in the Kansas City area. It is recommended that a minimum insulation rating of R-10 should be used for your basement.

Type of Insulation     Description   Advantages  Disadvantages
Batts and Rolls      Most common type of Insulation  Low cost      Not resistant to moisture
Spray Foam      Must be sprayed in with special equipment  Good resistance to both air and water  High cost
Loose Fill Insulation  Small particles of foam, fiber and other materials  Good for existing areas; Good for Basements      Not ideal for new construction installation in walls
Foam Board  1/2" Thick foam that can be applied directly to concrete  High R-Value for thickness  The overall R-Value is low; vapors can be toxic in case of fire.

There are several other things that a good basement finishing contractor will look for to ensure that your basement is insulated properly.
  • Check Rim Joist to make sure insulation has been applied.
  • Apply Foam Seal below basement walls to prevent draft
  • Close all gaps close to or around windows.
